From 20 to 24 August 2025, the 750th anniversary of our capital city will be celebrated with the 10th edition of SAIL Amsterdam, one of the largest nautical events in the world.
The event takes place every five years and attracts naval vessels, Tall Ships, replicas and even more modern and historic ships from all over the world. The best way to experience this huge event is from the water. Floating Amsterdam gives you the opportunity to see the ships up close.

About SAIL 2025
Sail 2025 is an event that you have to experience at least once in a lifetime. More than 2 million visitors can enjoy more than 800 ships that can be viewed in the capital city for five days. About 20 different nationalities and cultures will come together. The Tall Ships and their crew members will give you an unforgettable experience.
In these times when solidarity is so important, people come together to watch this spectacle, both on the quay and on the water.
In addition to the ships, cultural events, music performances and festivities are also organized.
History of SAIL Amsterdam
The first edition of SAIL Amsterdam was organized in 1975, in honor of the 700th anniversary of Amsterdam. Since it was such a great success, it was decided to organize this magical event every five years.
Anniversary
This year, SAIL Amsterdam is celebrating its anniversary with the 10th edition of the event. A quick calculation will tell you that something is not quite right if the first edition was in 1975.
COVID-19 / pandemic
2020 was originally the anniversary year of SAIL, but the pandemic threw a spanner in the works. Due to the lockdown, the event was cancelled that year. That is why this festive occasion has been postponed to the year 2025.
Route
Traditionally, SAIL starts with the Sail-In Parade. A fleet of ships sails from IJmuiden over the North Sea Canal to the port of Amsterdam. These ships are accompanied by thousands of smaller boats along the way. A truly magical sight.
Amsterdam 750 years
In 2025, the city of Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary. Festivities will take place throughout the year and SAIL is the highlight. This event was also part of the party when Amsterdam turned 700 and this year they are celebrating together. The city of Amsterdam will be immersed in a festive atmosphere all year round.
